Opening a UAE bank account as a foreigner

What UAE banks ask for when foreign founders open personal and business accounts, how long it takes and how to prepare a file that gets approved.

Reviewed October 2026. Rules change, so check with us before acting.

The UAE banking system is strong and well regulated, and in 2025 the European Union removed the UAE from its list of high-risk third countries for money laundering, a recognition of the country's progress. Banks are thorough with new clients, so preparation decides how quickly your account opens.

What banks usually ask for

Business account

  • Trade licence, memorandum and articles, share certificates and the register of beneficial owners
  • Passport, visa and Emirates ID of shareholders and signatories
  • A clear description of the business, expected transactions, main customers and suppliers, and countries involved
  • Contracts, invoices or letters of intent where available
  • Proof of the company's substance in the UAE, such as an office lease
  • Source of funds and source of wealth for the owners

Personal account

  • Passport, residence visa and Emirates ID
  • Salary certificate or proof of income
  • Proof of address

How long it takes

Timelines vary by bank and by the complexity of the business. Simple personal accounts can open quickly once you have your Emirates ID. Business accounts usually take longer because of the due diligence on owners and activities.

Our tips

  • Prepare one complete, consistent file before the first meeting, including a short business profile.
  • Explain your source of wealth clearly, with documents.
  • Choose banks that match your business profile and currencies.

We prepare the onboarding file with you and support you through the bank's questions. See company setup and PRO services.
