Moving to Dubai: a tax and business checklist

A step-by-step checklist for founders and families relocating to Dubai, covering home-country tax, UAE residence, company setup, banking and annual compliance.

Reviewed October 2026. Rules change, so check with us before acting.

Most problems with a move to Dubai come from doing the right things in the wrong order. This checklist sets out the usual sequence.

Before you leave

  1. Review your home-country residence rules and when your tax exposure ends. Start with the guide for your country.
  2. Value shareholdings and other assets that could trigger an exit or departure tax.
  3. Decide what happens to your home, pensions and any company you own at home.
  4. Plan the timing of dividends, bonuses and asset sales around the move.
  5. Choose your UAE structure: employment, free zone, mainland or holding company.

Arriving in the UAE

  1. Set up your company and obtain the trade licence.
  2. Apply for your residence visa and Emirates ID, and those of your family.
  3. Open personal and business bank accounts with a complete file.
  4. Sign a lease or buy a home, and keep the documents.
  5. Register the company for corporate tax, and for VAT if required.

In the first year

  1. Keep a record of your days in the UAE and abroad.
  2. Apply for your UAE tax residency certificate once you qualify.
  3. Keep proper books from the first month and file your first corporate tax return on time.
  4. Check e-invoicing requirements and deadlines for your business.
  5. Review the plan with your adviser at the end of the first year.
